A good surge protector can help protect electronics from voltage spikes, but it cannot keep your equipment running when the power goes out. The APC Back-UPS Pro BX1500M combines battery backup, surge protection, and Automatic Voltage Regulation in one compact tower. It provides up to 1500VA / 900 watts of capacity and includes 10 standard outlets. Five outlets provide both battery backup and surge protection, while the other five provide surge protection only.
For many home offices and small-business environments, that is enough capacity to protect a computer, monitors, modem, router, network switch, NAS, or other essential equipment while giving you time to safely shut systems down or ride through a short power interruption.

Power problems are not limited to complete blackouts.

The BX1500M uses Automatic Voltage Regulation, or AVR, to compensate for certain voltage variations without immediately switching to battery power.

The goal of a UPS isn’t necessarily to keep everything running for hours. In many installations, its most important job is maintaining power during short interruptions and giving equipment enough time to shut down properly during a longer outage.
1500VA / 900W Capacity
The BX1500M is rated for a maximum load of 900 watts or 1500VA. APC specifies approximately 2 minutes and 48 seconds of runtime at the full 900-watt load. Runtime increases as the connected load decreases.
That distinction is important.
A modem, router, and network switch may consume relatively little power and can therefore operate considerably longer than a large desktop computer and multiple monitors connected to the same UPS.
For this reason, we recommend sizing a UPS based on the equipment being protected rather than purchasing strictly by the VA number.

This lets you reserve limited battery capacity for equipment that truly needs to remain powered during an outage while still providing surge protection for secondary equipment.
For example, we might put a router, modem, network switch, computer, and primary monitor on the battery-backed outlets while connecting less critical accessories to the surge-only side.
Automatic Voltage Regulation
One of the features we particularly like at this price level is AVR.
Instead of switching to battery every time incoming voltage moves outside its ideal range, Automatic Voltage Regulation can correct certain voltage fluctuations first. APC specifically lists AVR for correcting voltage dips and surges to appropriate levels.
This can reduce unnecessary battery use while helping connected equipment receive more stable power.
LCD Status Display
The front LCD provides useful information about the UPS and incoming utility power, allowing you to quickly check operating conditions without connecting to software.
The BX1500M also includes audible notifications for changes in utility and UPS conditions.
For equipment tucked under a desk or installed near networking hardware, being able to immediately see what the UPS is doing is much more useful than relying on a single status light.
Replaceable Battery
UPS batteries are consumable components. They eventually lose capacity even when the UPS itself is functioning normally.
A major advantage of the BX1500M is its user-replaceable battery. Schneider Electric lists the APCRBC124 as the replacement battery cartridge for this model.
That means the entire UPS does not have to be discarded simply because the battery has reached the end of its useful life.
For equipment that may remain installed for years, we consider that a meaningful advantage.
Surge and Data-Line Protection
In addition to battery backup, the BX1500M provides a 789-joule surge energy rating and data-line surge protection.
This makes it useful for protecting networking and computing equipment from more than simply losing power.
It is worth remembering, however, that no consumer UPS can guarantee protection from every electrical event. Proper grounding, correctly installed electrical service, and appropriate whole-building surge protection are still important parts of a complete protection strategy.
One Important Limitation
The BX1500M uses a stepped approximation to a sine wave while operating on battery rather than true pure-sine-wave output.
For typical networking equipment, home-office systems, and many computers, this may be perfectly appropriate.
For specialized equipment, sensitive AV hardware, servers, or high-performance computer power supplies where pure-sine-wave output is specifically recommended, we would look at a UPS designed for that requirement instead.
That is one reason we don’t recommend UPS equipment solely by capacity.
